Wigan Council are excited to present 'Light Night Wigan + Leigh' this November - an exceptional programme of work highlighting the Borough’s amazing network of canals and wetland spaces.
The programme will take place across two distinct sites: Wigan Pier and Pennington Flash, offering visitors from Wigan and beyond the opportunity to explore anew these amazing locations in exciting and creative ways.
Many of the artists included in Light Night Wigan + Leigh have a particular interest in the natural world and our role as custodians of the planet. Their work will delight and intrigue visitors of all ages, who can see all the work at the same time as enjoying time in the open air.
The canals in and around Wigan are special places and an integral part of our history. Over two nights, artists will bring light to this incredible place, raising awareness of the waterways and creating new experiences and wonder during the winter evenings.
Luke Jerram’s multidisciplinary practice involves the creation of sculptures, installations and live arts projects. Living in the UK but working internationally since 1997, Jerram has created a number of extraordinary art projects which have excited and inspired people around the world. Having more than 600 exhibitions in 44 countries, he is now known globally for his innovative arts practice and large scale public artworks. We are delighted that he will be presenting a brand new work for the first time, commissioned by Wigan Council and Quays Culture.
Due to yellow weather warnings in the coming days and the safety concerns this raises in relation to visitors and the artwork, we have had to make the difficult decision to end the ‘Floating Earth’ installation by Luke Jerram earlier than planned.
For anyone booked on to see this beautiful piece of art from Thursday 25th November onward, we are afraid this will no longer be possible as the work is now closed with immediate effect. We are very sorry not to be able to accommodate everyone booked on for the remaining four days, there will however still be an opportunity to see the work from the 3rd – 11th December at Salford Quays as part of the Lightwaves programme – no tickets required.
Light Night Wigan + Leigh is produced by Things That Go On Things, Co- Artistic Directors Gemma Saunders and Jude Jagger.
